Utah favorite - Larry Sandvick pushing for another NFR trip

By: Cowboy Ted

Bareback rider Larry Sandvick of Belle Fourche, S.D., is fully recovered after being banged up in Utah earlier in the summer and the Wyoming cowboy won the first round, final round and average title Sunday at the Ellensburg (Wash.) Rodeo. Sandvick scored 161 points on two head and earned $5,897. The eight-time National Finals Rodeo qualifier is sixth in the World Standings with $58,515.

In steer wrestling, Todd Suhn of Brighton, Colo., threw three steers in 12.4 seconds to claim the average title. Suhn earned $7,355 steer wrestling and another $534 calf roping winning the Ellensburg Rodeo all-around title with $7,889.

Wade Wheatley of Stephenville, Texas, and Kyle Lockett of Ivanhoe, Calif., stretched three steers in 20.4 seconds. The ropers won $3,064 each at Ellensburg.

After reeling off 174 points on two bulls, Blue Stone of Ogden, Utah, won the average title and $6,291. Stone's weekend earnings boosted him from eleventh in the World Standings to sixth.

Stone has Wilderness Circuit rodeos in Salt Lake and St George to round out the month of September and the Wilderness Circuit season. Prize money at those rodeos would solidify his position for the circuit finals and provide the opportunity to win more money to qualify for his first appearance at the National Finals Rodeo.

Other average titlists in Ellensburg were Ira Slagowski of Carlin, Nev., saddle bronc riding, 166 points on two head, $6,242; Jeff Coehlo, Long Creek, Ore., calf roping, 28.7 seconds on three head, $4,443; Trevor Brazile of Pueblo, Colo., steer roping, 20.8 seconds on two head, $3,856; Tami Fontenot, Ethel, La., barrel racing, 52.57 on three runs, $4,577.

Three cowboys ranked in the top spot of their respective events in the World Standings won titles at the Magic Valley Stampede in Filer, Idaho, on Saturday. Kelly Wardell of Bellevue, Idaho, won the bareback riding title by scoring 84 points on Sankey Rodeo Company's Dunny. Wardell earned $1,344 in Filer and leads all other bareback riders with $103,495.

World Standings all-around leader Cody Ohl of Stephenville, Texas, teamed with Nick Rowland of Antlers, Okla., to rope their steer in 4.8 seconds and claim the team roping title. Ohl has amassed $148,768 in the all-around standings by team roping, calf roping and steer roping.

Rob Bell of Water Valley, Alberta, scored 86 points on Sankey's Home Grown to win the bull riding competition. Bell earned $1,727 in Filer and leads all bull riders with $80,827.

Other winners at the Magic Valley Stampede were a trio of Utah cowboys (tie) Riley Jones,Ogden, Utah, Mark Parker, Murray, Utah, Wade Ryan, Heber, Utah, steer wrestling, 5.0 seconds, $1,280 each; Glen O'Neill, Water Valley, Alberta, saddle bronc riding, 85 points on Sankey's Cindy Lou Who, $1,530; Stran Smith, Tell, Texas, calf roping, 9.2 seconds, $1,378; Sue Smith, Idaho Falls, Idaho, barrel racing, 17.43 seconds, $746.

Utah cowboys are making a push for another three-some at the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas this year. Blue Stone and Lan LaJuenesse are looking pretty solid for the NFR and Danyelle Campbell of St George, is making a late season push for another appearance at NFR after barely missing the spot last year.

Lan Lajuenesse is firmly positioned in second place in the bareback standings behind his trevaeling partner and longtime friend Kelly Wardell of Idaho. LaJuenesse is the 1999 World Champion bareback rider and is still looking to qualify for the Olympic Rodeo to be held in his home state of Utah in Feb.

LaJuenesse is looking to become the third member of his traveling party along with Rocky Steagall (Dodge National Circuit Finals champ) and Wardell (Wrangler Tour winter champ) to qualify for the Olympics. LaJuenesse would like to serve as host to his partners during the busy Olympic rush in Utah this winter.

Blue Stone of Ogden is looking solid in the bull riding event and is almost assured of making his first NFR apppearance after a very successful season. Stone is pushing for a top-5 position and is less than $500 behind the reigning Wrold Champion Cody Hancock in the world standings. (Hancock is also a former Wildreness Circuit champ)

Danyelle Campbell is no stranger to NFR. The Washingtton, Utah native has been to Las Vegas a few times in Dec. and is sitting in 20th position with less than $5,000 separating her from the national Top-15.

She has the Utah State Fair rodeo in Salt Lake and her hometown rodeo in St George in September to bolster her winnings before headin west to California for the final push during the Cow Palace in San Francisco in Nov.

Two years ago Tommy Cook from Heber and Tony Mendes of Jensen joined LaJuenesse to form the Utah threesome and the year before that it was Cook, Campbell and Mendes. Last year LaJuenesse was the lone representative from the Bee Hive state
