Idaho PRCA bareback
rider helps rodeo athletes get organized
By: Cowboy Ted
A top rated bareback rider from
Idaho is making it easier for professional rodeo cowboys and cowgirls
to organize all of the business aspects associated with the sport
of rodeo.
Kelly Wardell of Bellvue, Idaho,
has made a couple of trips to the NFR during his fifteen year career
as a professional rodeo cowboy. He has used that experience to serve
as the cornerstone of information used to design the Pocket Rodeo
Planner.
The 36-year-old cowboy has designed
a rodeo planner to fit the needs of all cowboys and cowgirls that
are attempting to make a living in the sport of rodeo. Wardell has
three distinct designs for the unique needs of rodeo contestants.
There are three versions of the
Pocket Rodeo Planner with ring-bound pages for roughstock riders,
another for timed event contestants, and a third planner designed
specifically for barrel racers. The planners make it simple to keep
track of entries, expenses, receipts, along with important phone
numbers and other information, according to Wardell.
Wardell's planners were designed
with rodeo folks in mind. The veteran rodeo man added envelope containers,
which are included in the planner and used to store receipts as
cowboys collect them, while they travel to rodeos across the country.
"In my 15 years of rodeo, I have
never found a planner that works for rodeo, said Wardell. I figured
it was time to come out with a planner that worked for rodeo."
"I never thought much about keeping
records until I made it to the National Finals a couple years ago
and was doing my taxes at the end of the year and looking all over
the place for receipts and dates of when I was at certain rodeos.
This planner makes it real easy to keep track of everything associated
with rodeo. It is set-up to let you keep records as you travel to
rodeos around the circuits."
The Pocket Rodeo Planner is priced
at $32 and Wardell also features a leather bound planner priced
at $105 - complete with all the items needed to keep rodeo records
as you travel across the country.
Wardell sold over 320 planners
this past year and would like to double this amount next year and
eventually meet a goal of 1,000 planners among the 11,000 current
PRCA members. He reported that spring was the peak time for sales
when contestants are getting ready for the upcoming rodeo season.
"There are a lot of planners on
the market for high school contestants and Little Britches, but
I tried to simplify the books that are on the market and make them
user friendly for professionals in the sport of rodeo," Wardell
stated.
The veteran bareback rider and
two-time qualifier for NFR is currently recovering from shoulder
surgery and is out for the season. A horse rolled over on him and
dislocated his shoulder, causing enough damage to require surgery,
but Wardell hopes to be back in shape and riding bareback horses
again in time for Denver in January.
