Heber City to host Cowboy Poetry Gathering

By: Cowboy Ted

A host of cowboy poets and Western singers will roll into Heber City, Utah on Nov. 7-11, as the quaint mountain town, situated near Park City will be the host of the Seventh Annual Cowboy Poetry Gathering & Buckaroo Fair. Heber City is also the site of the Utah High School Championship Rodeo held each year in June. Park City is also the site of the 2002 Winter Olympic skiing events to be held in Utah in Feb.

The Cowboy Poetry Gathering has become a favorite of fans across the western United States and will open on Wed. Nov. 10 with a Dutch Oven Cook-Off and dinner followed by cowboy poetry and a cowboy music concert on opening night. Waddie Mitchell, Don Edwards & other well known cowboy poets will entertain fans during a ride on the historic Heber Valley Railroad featuring a train ride through the Wasatch Mountains of Utah while listening to songs and poems by the famous entertainers aboard the Heber Valley Railroad.

Waddie Mitchell and Don Edwards will headline a cast of famous cowboy poets and western singers during their performance on Fri. Nov. 9. Baxter Black will take the stage at Wasatch High School for a performance on Sat. Nov. 10 and the Bar J Wranglers will perform on Sat and Sun to complete the last of performers on the main stage.

Ogden western singing sensation Brenn Hill will also take the stage and has been a favorite of fans at cowboy poetry festivals across the country. Chris LeDoux said, "The best new artist I've heard is Brenn Hill. You just don't know him yet," during an interview in Country Weekly Magazine. Waddie Mitchell also said Brenn Hill is one of the most promising new artists in their circle of cowboy music.

Ernie Sites is also back in Heber again this year and the singing cowboy is a hit with fans of all ages. The Idaho cowboy entertains the crowd with rope tricks, yodeling, storytelling, cowboy poetry and Western singing. He has a song called Cowboy Boogie that gets the youngsters going from the very start of the song.

Don Kennington has had his poems published in a number of cowboy and rodeo publications and he still earns part of his salary shoeing horses. Kennington will bejoined by Andy Nelson and Joni Harms of Idaho and Oregon respectively. Sam Deleeuw will give fans the female concept to cowboy poetry as the Utah native takes the stage along with Heber resident poet Jeff Carson.

The Cowboy Poetry Gathering in Heber City, Utah also features the Buckaroo Fair with a number of traditional western booths featuring merchants from across the United States with authentic western items.

The event will conclude on Sun. with a non-denominational Gospel Hour featuring the Bar J Wranglers. Tickets are available on-line at SmithsTix or by calling 1 (800) 888-8499 or locally at Days Market in Heber City. For more information log onto www.cowboypoetryutah.com
