Wilderness Circuit Cowboy Kelly Wardell keeps winning and winning and winning

By: Cowboy Ted

Bareback rider Kelly Wardell's year gets better every time he nods his head. Wardell of Bellevue, Idaho, won the Tour round with an 87-point ride on Harry Vold's Sheep Tick in front of a near capacity crowd at Penrose Stadium Sunday afternoon.

The Idaho Cowboy is having the best season of his career and leads the PRCA bareback standings by a substantial amount over traveling partner and 1999 World Champion Lan LaJuenesse of Morgan, Utah This is Wardell's first summer Tour win and currently ranks fifth in the Copenhagen Cup Series Standings with 31 points.

"I would have hated to get his big lead (in the Jack Daniel's World Standings) and then lose it because I couldn't qualify for Dallas (Copenhagen Cup Finale), " said Wardell. "Hopefully with this win I'll get to go."

The Tour round of the Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo will be televised October 14 at 10:30 p.m. (EDT) on ESPN2.

The team roping competition was as tough as it gets. Four-time world champions Speed Williams and Rich Skelton split the Tour win with Richard Eiguren and B.J. Campbell, who currently lead the Jack Daniel's World Standings. With the win Williams and Skelton earn their first Tour points, while Eiguren and Campbell move into a tie for seventh place in the standings.

The summer series of the Tour consists of the championship rounds of 10 major professional rodeos. Colorado Springs was the eighth stop on the Tour. Throughout the Tour, the top finishers at each event accumulate points toward the Copenhagen Cup Series Standings. The top 12 competitors in each event in the standings will qualify for the $700,000 Copenhagen Cup Finale, scheduled for October 25-28 at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas.

Canadian steer wrestler Lee Graves finished ahead of the rest of the field with a time of 4.1 seconds. Graves of Calgary, Alberta, added 12 series points to the nine he won in Oakley, Utah, on July 7 to move him into a tie for fourth.

Another Canadian took top honors in the saddle bronc riding. Rod Hay of Wildwood, Alberta, rode Harry Vold's Sun Devil for 85 points and the Tour win. Hay is fourth in the Copenhagen Cup Series Standings with 35 points.

Calf roper Brent Lewis is enjoying his success on the Wrangler ProRodeo Tour's summer series. Lewis of Pinon, N.M., took the Tour round win in Colorado Springs stopping the clock in 7.8 seconds. This marks the third time Lewis has either won or split the win on the summer Tour. He now leads the standings with 46 points.

Ten-time world champion Charmayne James of Athens, Texas, and 2000 Rookie of the Year Gloria Freeman of Calhoun, Ga., stopped the clock in 17.37 seconds to split the Tour round win. With the win James moves into first in the series standings with 32.5 points, while Freeman sets fifth with 24.5.

Bull rider Vince Stanton rode Broken Arrow's Copenhagen Barracuda for 87 points and the Tour win on Sunday afternoon. This the same bull Josh O'Byrne received 90 points during last year's Tour round in Colorado Springs. Stanton of Weiser, Idaho, sets at the top of the leaderboard with 39.5 points.
