(KAAL-TV - Rochester Minnesota) -- He's a hat tipping, belt buckle wearing, real life cowboy with a healthy message for kids across the country.

Today, Cowboy Ted Hallisey corralled students at Rochester's Bamber Valley Elementary School and talked with doctors at the Mayo Clinic.

6 NEWS FIRST reporter Ericka Miller tells us why Cowboy Ted's unique way of teaching is grabbing the attention of so many.

From a herd of loud and rowdy kids, to a group of medical professionals from across the world, Cowboy Ted's message comes in loud and clear,

"They are in charge of their lives and if they make some healthy decisions now they can live to be 100 without any complications or problems."

Cowboy Ted Hallisy, a real-life cowboy from Utah, is using his cowboy ways to teach kids 8 Simple Rules To Healthy Living.

So far he's lassoed 150-thousand kids to teach them about doing their homework, being kind to animals and saying no to drugs, tobacco and alcohol.

"We give them that message before they use the tobacco--before they get the addiction--so we kind of just say that smart cowboys don't use tobacco," says Hallisy.

But this time, Cowboy Ted's main reason to visit Rochester was to talk to his peers at Mayo Clinic's third annual spit tobacco summit, about ways the medical field can keep kids from getting addicted.

Cowboy Ted says it's important for everyone to be involved to keep kids free of drugs and alcohol.

So no matter if he's talking to adults or kids, he wants everyone to take away the 8 Simple Rules To Health Living.

Cowboy Ted's goal is to talk to 1 million kids about his 8 simple rules. He says he should reach his goal in the next 5 to 10 years, then it's on to the next million.
