Cowboy's Quest to Create a National Day of the Horse

Dennis Reis and Day of the Horse Tour will be in Utah on September 13-14 for a two-day seminar at Spanish Fork Fairgrounds call 1-800-732-8220 for details.

Dennis Reis has devoted his life to the practice of horsemanship and is dedicated to improving the horse-human relationship through the sharing of age-old horse handling methods and knowledge. He is commonly known as one of the top Horse Whisperers in the nation. Reis is on a quest to establish a National Day of the Horse to honor the horse on the second Sat. in Dec. each year.

Reis is founder of the School of Universal Horsemanship in Penngrove, CA. and began the legislative process to create a California State observance day honoring the horse in January 2002.

"I wanted to increase the awareness of the importance of the horse in our culture, Reis reported. The horse industry contributes over $112 billion annually to the American economy and the horse is a common bond among all peoples who led the way in building our country. Our past rides upon the horse's back and is a living link to the heritage and history of our nation."

With help from California State Assemblyman Joe Nation, Reis was successful in establishing the first recognized Day of the Horse when a proclamation was passed on the California Senate Floor on June 21, 2002. The measure passed by an unanimous vote and established the second Saturday in December as the official Day of the Horse in California.

"I was pleased to be able to author this resolution to honor the contributions horses have made, Nation said. This will also increase awareness to the horses' welfare in the State of California." Following his recent success in California, Reis is working to give horses in the other 49 states the same recognition. His goal is to create a national observance for the Day of the Horse.

He has coordinated a petition drive to create a national day to honor the horse on the second Sat in Dec. in states across the United States.Reis will visit 14 states in Sept. and Oct. to share his love of horses and gentle horsemanship techniques during evening horse seminars (see www.reisranch.com for full schedule).

He has also arranged for petition signing drives at Tractor Supply stores in cities across the United States "I would like to invite all people of California and the rest of the nation to celebrate the first officially recognized Day of the Horse in

December each year and I encourage everyone to continue to promote the welfare of this majestic animal. With the help of all horse lovers, I know we will achieve our goal to create a national Day of the Horse," Reis concluded.

The well-known horseman and horse whisperer is also serving as a mentor to 7-time world champion rodeo cowboy Ty Murray. The most decorated cowboy in rodeo history has publicly praised Reis and his horsemanship programs and is assisting with efforts to establish the Day of the Horse.

"I've gotten to spend a lot of time with renowned horseman Dennis Reis, and it's been a lot of fun, said Murray. He came and spent a week with me here at the ranch the other day before his clinic in Fort Worth. I first met Dennis during the National Finals Rodeo, where he puts on horsemanship demonstrations at the Excalibur. Dennis is a former bareback rider and he's the real deal when it comes to horses," Murray reported on his www.tymurray.com web

site in March.
