Always hike with at least one other person for safety. Using a hiking stick is good for balance and to move things out of your path.
If it looks like rain – you may want to postpone your hike for another day or make sure to stay on higher ground and avoid narrow canyons that could lead to flash floods with water levels that can reach over your head.
Be on the lookout for snakes and other wild animals and give them a chance to move away from you. If you see a cougar or mountain lion – don’t panic – just make lots of noise and try to look big – never run from a cougar – they will win that race every time.
And do not leave anything behind on the trail always haul out with what you went in with.
